Pakistan expels 500 Afghan refugees

Staff Report

QUETTA -- Pakistan expelled almost 500 Afghan refugees to Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, Afghan officials said Wednesday (February 22), according to TOLO News.

The refugees had been living along the border and in Quetta, said the officials.

The refugees entered Pakistan illegally, said Pakistani authorities.

The Afghan Ministry of Refugees and Repatriations called the expulsion a violation of an agreement recently signed by Afghanistan, Pakistan and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Pakistani authorities arrested at least 1,600 Afghan refugees after last week's suicide bombing of a Sufi shrine in Sindh Province, Pakistan, added the ministry.
