ISLAMABAD -- The federal government Wednesday (February 22) approved the Punjab government's request to deploy Rangers in Punjab, Dawn reported.
The decision clears the way to deploy more than 2,000 Rangers in Punjab for 60 days under Article 147 of the constitution and under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.
The paramilitary Rangers are expected to help police fight militants.
A high-level provincial government committee requested the deployment after a number of deadly terrorist attacks hit Pakistan, including one in Lahore that killed dozens on February 13 .
