Pakistan to spend Rs. 100 billion annually to develop tribal areas

Pakistan Forward

WANA -- Prime Minister Imran Khan Wednesday (April 24) announced his plan to set aside Rs. 100 billion ($71 million) annually for the development of Pakistan's tribal areas, Dawn reported.

Khan made the announcement while addressing tribal elders in the Spinkai Raghzai area of South Waziristan.

The amount is the largest to be spent on the area -- where the country's worst problems of militancy and terrorism have centred -- since the creation of Pakistan, according to Khan.

The government will provide everything that the tribes have lacked, Khan said, noting that the area is the poorest in the country and has Pakistan's worst education and the highest unemployment rate.

Residents of tribal areas were left behind because "no one understood them or tried to understand them", Khan said.
