ISLAMABAD -- Chief of Army Staff Qamar Jawed Bajwa Tuesday (December 19) gave a national security briefing to the Senate, Dawn reported.

Top military officers "talked about the geo-strategic environment from a security lens, informed the senators about threats to national security and gave an update on the war on terror and future plan of action", Maj. Gen. Asif Ghafoor, Pakistani army spokesman, said after the briefing.

The briefing was a "very candid, very free, very frank, very objective" question-and-answer session, he said.

"When we are together, no one can defeat us," Ghafoor said.

It marked the first time in six years that top-ranking military leaders briefed lawmakers.

The occasion was the "first time such a detailed briefing took place. Senators asked questions which were answered in detail by the chief of army staff", Farook Naek, former Senate chairman, told Geo News.

The briefing marks a "historic day for democracy and civil-military relations in Pakistan", Senator Mushahid Hussain said.
