QUETTA -- Four Pakistani paramilitary soldiers were killed and two injured in a clash with militants in Balochistan Province Monday (December 31), the military said.

The incident happened in Loralai District, about 262km northeast of Quetta.

Troops confronted the militants when they tried to attack a paramilitary residential compound, said a Monday statement from the military.

The battle left four soldiers and four insurgents, including a suicide bomber, dead.

No group has taken responsibility, but Baloch separatist groups and Islamist militants have attacked security forces in the province in the past.

In December, a Pakistani separatist wanted over a November attack on the Chinese consulate in Karachi was killed in a suicide blast in Afghanistan.

The Balochistan Liberation Army claimed the assault on the Chinese consulate, labeling Beijing an "oppressor" guilty of "military expansionism on Baloch soil".
