Security forces bust alleged TTP network targeting Pakistan Super League

LAHORE -- Pakistani authorities dismantled what has been described as the biggest Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) network in Punjab Province, Dawn reported Friday (March 30).

Joint teams including personnel from the Punjab Police Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) Thursday (March 29) arrested six suspected militants throughout the province, largely in Lahore and Gujranwala, said an official.

The detainees were part of a network responsible for two deadly suicide attacks in Lahore -- one against army personnel on Bedian Road last April and another targeting police on Ferozepur Road last July, said the official.

The arrested militants also claimed during interrogation that they were responsible for killing Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) Brig. Zahoor Fazal Qadri and his brother in Sargodha in 2014.

The arrests were part of a major security operation aimed at preventing a TTP plot to attack the Pakistan Super League matches in Lahore on March 20-21, according to the official.

Raids are under way to capture the network's remaining suspected members.
