GHALANAI -- Authorities in Mohmand Agency have rescued three members of a polio monitoring team who were kidnapped Saturday (March 17).

Unidentified attackers opened fire on the seven-member team in Safi Tehsil, killing two members and abducting three. Two others escaped and informed officials of the incident, Dawn reported.

The volunteer team was monitoring the results of a polio vaccination campaign carried out in the agency from March 12-15.

Security forces Sunday (March 18) rescued the abducted workers, Mohmand Assistant Political Agent Tariqullah Khan told Pakistan Forward.

A member of the Frontier Corps was killed when the kidnappers opened fire, he said.

"We will continue to assist the polio campaign to safeguard children against diseases," Khan added.

Authorities have arrested 39 suspects as part of the investigation.
