RAWALPINDI -- A Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court Thursday (August 31) acquitted five defendants in connection with the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and sentenced two other defendants to 17 years in prison, Dawn reported.

Bhutto was slain in Rawalpindi in December 2007.

The court acquitted five accused Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) members but sentenced Saud Aziz, the then-police chief of Rawalpindi, and Khurram Shahzad, a former Rawal Town superintendent of police, to 17 years in prison each.

The court declared Gen. (ret.) Pervez Musharraf, who was president at the time of Bhutto's death, an absconder (fugitive).
