Pakistan re-opens border with Afghanistan

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistani Prime Minister Miam Muhammad Nawaz Sharif ordered the immediate re-opening of crossings on the Afghan border, said a statement from Prime Minister's House, adding that the re-opening was meant as a gesture of goodwill, Khaama Press reported Monday (March 20).

Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan Omar Zakhilwal welcomed the decision, recalling the March 16 reassurance by Sartaj Aziz, Nawaz Sharif's advisor on foreign affairs, that the border would re-open.

Pakistan shut the border after the suicide bombing of a Sufi shrine in Sehwan, Sindh Province, in February.
