Pakistan announces 3,000 PhD scholarships for Afghan scholars

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan is planning to grant 3,000 scholarships for Afghans seeking a PhD, Khaama Press reported Thursday (February 9), quoting President Mamnoon Hussain.

Pakistan already has granted 3,000 scholarships to Afghan students, he said. He did not disclose the time frame for awarding the existing or future scholarships.

The PhD scholarships are part of a Higher Education Commission project, said Hussain, adding that the Afghan students will receive the educational opportunities enjoyed by Pakistani students.

I did not like this news brief for several reasons. First, it is too brief. Second, it does not tell us that what makes this offer significant. Third, readers want to know what other options - from India and other countries - are available to Afghan scholars and what makes Pakistani scholarships attractive to them. Frankly, I am disappointed!
