Khan allows Afghan refugees to open bank accounts in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD -- Prime Minister Imran Khan Monday (February 25) announced that he had ordered authorities to enable registered Afghan refugees to open bank accounts in Pakistan.

"From now onwards they can participate in the formal economy of the country," Khan tweeted.

"This should have been done a long time ago," he added.

Pakistan has an estimated 2.4 million Afghan refugees, both registered and undocumented, according to Dawn.

Khan last September sparked controversy by vowing to enable Afghan refugees born in Pakistan to become citizens.
