Punjab government seizes seminary, mosque suspected of being militant headquarters

By Abdul Nasir Khan

LAHORE -- The Punjab government Friday (February 22) seized a mosque and seminary in Bahwalpur District suspected of serving as headquarters of Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM), a banned militant group, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement.

The campus includes Madressatul Sabir and Jama-e-Masjid Subhanallah. About 600 students and 70 faculty use the complex, said the statement.

The Punjab government appointed an administrator to run the campus's affairs, it added.

The action emerged from a decision made during a National Security Committee (NSC) meeting Thursday (February 21) in Islamabad chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan, the statement said.

India has accused JeM of being involved in a suicide attack February 14 in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 40 Indian security personnel.
