Gilgit-Baltistan police arrest suspect in school arsons

GILGIT -- Police in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) announced Wednesday (December 12) the arrest of a militant "commander" accused of helping burn down multiple schools in Diamer in August, Dawn reported Wednesday.

More than a dozen schools burned down in Diamer August 2. Half of them were all-female institutions.

GB Scouts and other security forces Tuesday (December 11) arrested Qari Hidayatullah and three suspected accomplices. Local elders reportedly facilitated the arrests.

In October an investigation by multiple security agencies identified 22 suspects in the arson. So far, authorities have made 40 arrests in connection with the case and are still pursuing 15 others, according to Dawn.
