Pakistan Army warns of strong action against hardliners calling for mutiny

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan's army warned Friday (November 2) its patience was being tested after it received threats from Islamist hardliners enraged by the acquittal of a Christian woman accused of blasphemy.

The army's tolerance has reached its "threshold" after hardliners called for a mutiny against army top brass in response to the Supreme Court's dismissal of blasphemy charges against Asia Bibi earlier this week, said army spokesman Asif Ghafoor.

Bibi's acquittal ended her eight-year ordeal on death row.

"We are tolerating remarks against us, but action can be taken according to the law and constitution," Ghafoor told state media.

The protests are being largely led by the Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan party, which is known for its hardline stance on blasphemy issues, and several other mainstream religious parties.

"Don’t force us into taking an action," Ghafoor added.
