ISLAMABAD -- Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, a top Taliban commander who formerly served as the right-hand man of the late Taliban founder Mullah Mohammad Omar and was in Pakistani custody for more than eight years, has been freed, sources said Thursday (October 25).
"Baradar was freed yesterday afternoon, and he joined his family," Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told AFP in a WhatsApp message.
Baradar, the most high-profile Taliban leader detained by Pakistan since the 9/11 attacks, was reportedly arrested in Karachi in 2010.
An unidentified Pakistani intelligence official also said Baradar was "released a couple of days ago".
