Pakistanis observe Ashura with tight security

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistanis observed Ashura -- the 10th day of the holy month of Muharram -- across the country Friday (September 21) to pay homage to Imam Hussain, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and to other martyrs of Karbala amid tight security, Dawn reported Friday.

Security has long remained a major concern during Muharram because of past sectarian violence and suicide attacks.

The government deployed thousands of security personnel, including police, Rangers and Frontier Corps, to protect the Ashura processions.

Cellular service saw a partial suspension in some cities, and authorities banned pillion-riding (shared motorcycle riding) to deter drive-by shootings in many cities.

Hospitals and ambulance services went on high alert.
