Pakistani court orders release of Nawaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD -- A Pakistani court Wednesday (September 19) ordered the release of Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister, and Maryam Nawaz, his daughter, pending an appeal hearing, Sharif's lawyer said. The decision suspends their prison sentences.

In July, Nawaz Sharif was arrested upon his return to Pakistan. That month, an anti-corruption court sentenced him to 10 years in prison and his daughter and son-in-law to seven years over properties they allegedly owned in Britain, following revelations in the Panama Papers.
