PUNJAB -- A politician and his son in Punjab Province Monday (July 16) survived an assassination attempt, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported Tuesday (July 17), quoting police.
Sheikh Aftab Ahmed and his son, Salman Sarwar, were traveling in Attock District Monday night when would-be assassins opened fire on their vehicle, said police, adding that both men survived.
Ahmed is running for the national parliament as a member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party in general elections scheduled for July 25. His son is running for the Punjab assembly.
The news comes after a spate of election-related violence in Pakistan, including a suicide bombing that killed about 150 people, including a candidate, in Balochistan July 13.
