ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan suffers from the world's highest newborn mortality rate, according to a report that the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) released Tuesday (February 20), reported AFP.
One in every 22 babies in Pakistan die within a month in Pakistan, according to the report. Meanwhile, in Japan, which has the lowest newborn mortality rate, a baby has only a one-in-1,111 chance of dying so soon.
The world's poorest countries, mostly in Africa, still see a 50-fold higher risk of death for newborns than do the richest countries, according to the report.
Although older children have seen great progress in health during the last quarter-century, "we have not made similar progress in ending deaths among children less than one month old," said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF's executive director.
