ISLAMABAD -- Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) in Islamabad has launched a programme to educate transgenders for free, SAMAA TV reported Wednesday (October 4).
"Through this programme, we hope to return their long-lost self-respect and dignity to them and make them responsible citizens," AIOU vice-chancellor Shahid Siddiqui said, according to SAMAA. "We have received a positive response from the community and have already started receiving applications for the programme."
AIOU did not disclose more details about the programme.
The university provides free education from 10th grade to Ph.D. level for the handicapped and visually impaired, as well as for jail inmates. It has 44 campuses nationwide.
