SINDH -- A team of Sindh Police headed by Station House Officer (SHO) Vijay Khatri Monday (July 24) in Umerkot District broke up a marriage ceremony that would have united an 11-year-old girl and 33-year-old man, Dawn reported, quoting Khatri.
The groom's mother said her family had paid Rs. 130,000 ($1,230) for the girl's hand in marriage and denied knowledge of "any law that prohibits underage marriage."
Police arrested the groom and took the girl into protective custody.
Sindh law prohibits marriage of any girl under age 18.
