Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government approves compulsory education bill

PESHAWAR -- The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet Monday (February 6) approved a bill proposing primary and secondary education be made compulsory in the province, Dawn reported.

The new law offers free education to all children aged 5 to 16 in public schools, Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani, Chief Minister Pervez Khattak's spokesman, said.

Parents who fail to comply could be fined or imprisoned, Ghani said.

The cabinet also approved a bill making Koran reading a compulsory subject for Muslim schoolchildren from grades one through five and Koran translation compulsory for them from grades six through ten, Ghani said.
