LAHORE -- The Punjab government is considering deploying the para-military Rangers to fight terrorism in the province, media reported.
The provincial government recently sought the federal interior minister's approval of a 60-day deployment of Rangers to help the provincial Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Dawn reported September 9.
If authorised, the Rangers will assist police and the CTD in fighting terrorism only during Eid ul Adha and Muharram, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah told Dawn.
Meanwhile in Peshawar, police recently detained a suspect accused of planting a bomb on a bus, Geo News reported September 9. The local Bomb Disposal Squad defused the explosive.
Police September 8 in Karachi arrested a suspected extremist in connection with charges in the slaying of Sufi singer Amjad Sabri, the Sindh CTD said, according to Geo News. Sabri was killed in Karachi June 22.
In other news, authorities September 8 in Qila Abdullah District, Balochistan Province, recovered Asad Tareen, the kidnapped son of Balochistan Local Government Minister Sardar Mustafa Tareen, after more than three months of captivity, Dawn reported. The younger Tareen was kidnapped in Pashin District May 21 and reportedly was taken to Afghanistan.
